Classroom Procedures

Entering the Classroom

  • Walk into the classroom and go to your seat.
  • Do not walk around the room.
  • Keep your hands to yourself; do not touch anything that does not belong to you.

When the Tardy Bell Rings

  • As soon as the tardy bell rings, each student will be silent.
  • Begin work on the bell ringer, which will be on the Smart Board.
  • If need be, I will explain the bell ringer. If you have a question, raise your hand.
  • While you are working on the bell ringer, I will take roll and pass out graded papers. Once again, students will be silent.
  • If you are not in your seat when the bell rings, you are tardy.

When You Are Absent

  • Ask a fellow student what was assigned outside of class, or ask me when you enter/exit the classroom.
  • You will be allowed the same amount of time you missed to complete the assignments.

Sitting at Your Desk

  • Keep your hands to yourself. Do not touch anything that does not belong to you.
  • After the tardy bell has rung, you will be silent.
  • When we are reading, having class discussions, or working, you will be silent.
  • Do not put your feet on the racks on the seat in front you.
  • Do not leave any trash on the floors. If you have any trash, wait until you leave to throw it away. The trashcan at the front of the room is for student use; the one next to my desk is for my use.
  • When getting materials out of a bag or from underneath your desk, do so without disturbing other students.
  • Always face the front of the room.
  • Do not sleep.

When the Teacher is Talking

  • When I (or any other teacher/administrator) am talking, you will be silent.
  • If you have a question while I (or another teacher/administrator) am talking, raise your hand, and I will call on you.

Asking Questions

  • Feel free to ask questions that are related to whatever we are doing in the classroom without raising your hand.
  • If more than one student has a question, I will call on one student at a time.
  • If working on an assignment, raise your hand to ask a question.

Listening to and Responding to Questions

  • If I have asked something or another student has said something, and you would like to respond, feel free to do so without raising your hand.
  • If more than one student has a question/response, I will call on one student at a time.
  • Keep questions/statements related to whatever we are doing in the classroom.

Moving Around the Room

  • Do not move around the room.
  • If you need to, and it is for a good reason, ask for permission.

Paper Heading

  • Anytime you use a piece of paper to write an assignment on, write the following on the top right-hand side of the page:
  • Name
  • Class
  • Assignment
  • Date
  • For all other assignments, write your name and the date.

Passing in Papers

  • On the day an assignment is due or after we have finished taking a test, I will have each student pass their papers in at the same time.
  • When passing papers in after I have instructed you to do so, you will pass your paper to the person to your right. Once the papers have arrived at the far side of the room, I will come by and collect each stack.
  • Students will be silent while handing in assignments.

When You Finish an Assignment Early or Are Waiting for Help

  • Sit silently at your desk.
  • You can read a library book or complete other English homework, such as finishing the bell ringer for the day.

When You Need to Use the Restroom

  • Raise your hand, and I will call on you; then, you can ask to use the restroom.

When You Need to Sharpen Your Pencil

  • Bring the proper classroom materials to class every day. Bring more than one pencil/pen.
  • If you must sharpen your pencil, raise your hand and ask for permission.

Keeping Your English Binder

  • You must have a three ring binder with dividers for the following sections: bell ringers, notes, quick write, and graded papers.
  • You must bring your English binder to class every day.

Dismissal

  • The bell does not dismiss you; I will dismiss you.
  • Before I dismiss you, I will ask each student to clean up, which means that you should make sure that there is no trash on or around your desk. As stated earlier, all trash will be thrown away when you leave the classroom.
  • You are dismissed after I have said, “Have a great day!”
